BUILDING A HEALTHY SELF-ESTEEM
Ojective: Develop a healthy balance of liking who you are, but also recognizing that there are ways you can continue to grow and to develop.
Self-esteem reflects a person's overall subjective emotional evaluation of his or her own worth.
High or healthy, you feel good about yourself and see yourself as deserving the respect of others.
Low, you put little value on your opinions and ideas.
Self-worth- is a judgment of yourself as well as an attitude toward yourself.
Benefits of a healthy self-esteem
- Positive characteristics and skills that you can offer to other people.
- A feeling of worth from being loved and accepted by others including family and friends.
- You will more likely to be happy, to make and keep positive friends, and to persevere in working through difficult situations that occur in relationships.
- See challenging situations as opportunities to try something new, even if they're not completely successful.
- You like themselves and believe you are worthy of being cared for by others, they are less likely than are people with lower self-esteem to stay in abusive or exploitive situations.
- You are also more likely to take care of yourself physically and emotionally, and to persist in difficult and effortful pursuits such as completing their education or mastering an occupation
Low self-esteem will have you believing that you do not deserve basic things like food, shelter, love, time, respect, or dignity from others.
- You may behave in negative, self-defeating ways that end up confirming your poor opinion of yourself.
- It will cause you to not put much energy or effort into preparing for information things.
- Anxiously dwell on thoughts about how badly you’re going to do or be about something.
- A Negative feedback cycle of self-defeating thoughts and behavior is sometimes referred to as a self-fulfilling prophesy.
- Self-fulfilling prophesy- is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true, by the very terms of prophecy itself, due to positive feedback between belief and behavior.
- Ashamed- reluctant to do something through fear of embarrassment or humiliation.
- Embarrassed/Embarrassment- a feeling of self-consciousness, shame, or awkwardness.
- Guilty- culpable of or responsible for a specified wrongdoing.
- Sad- feeling or showing sorrow; unhappy,
- Angry- having a strong feeling of or showing annoyance, displeasure, or hostility; full of anger
